SOUTH KOREA: North Korea Attacked Yeonpyeong Island

On 23 November 2010 (Tuesday), North Korea sent an artillery attack against Yeonpyeong Island, killing to South Korean Marines, two civilians and wounding at least 14 Marines and several civilians. But North Korean-daily newspaper The Chonsun Ilbo reported that the mood in the country after the attack has been boisterous, as military representative claimed that South Korea had violated their armistice agreement of 1953 when it joined in ongoing military exercises with the United States military. The 1953 armistice had halted the Korean war in the past even without a peace agreement.

The North, Texas Insider reported, fired around 2:30 pm an estimated 200 artillery shells on the Island while the South returned fire with about 80 shells of its own howitzers.

A few days earlier, Pyongyang revealed to a visiting American scientist the existence of a new uranium enrichment facility. North Korean leader King Jung Il has poised to give the reign of government to his son. South Korea has recently started an annual military exercise, called Safeguarding the Nation, that involves tens of thousands of its troops, which the North denounced as a provocation.

"We truly want to work with and help them, and prosper together, but North Korea continues to starve its people, and isolate itself. North Korea continues to defy the international community's demands and our honest attitude to cooperate with them, so it's a real pity, and North Korea's going to be faced with difficulties on the inside and outside. They are becoming isolated, continuously. They are faced with domestic difficulties, political and economical. We South Koreans are ready and anxious to help them." [Young-sun Kim, deputy minister for public affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs]
